5 Tips for First-Time Trail Riders at Broken Bow Ranch

Heading out on your first trail ride? Here's everything you need to know to have a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable experience at Broken Bow Ranch.

Heading out on your first trail ride is one of the most exciting things you can do. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who hasn't been in the saddle in years, a guided trail ride at Broken Bow Ranch is designed to be safe, comfortable, and absolutely unforgettable.

Here are five tips to help you make the most of your first ride:

**1. Wear the Right Footwear**

This is the single most important thing to get right. You must wear closed-toe shoes with a small heel — this prevents your foot from slipping through the stirrup. Boots are ideal. Sandals, flip-flops, or open-toe shoes are not permitted for safety reasons. We provide cowboy hats, but footwear is your responsibility.

**2. Dress for the Texas Weather**

Seagoville summers can be hot, so lightweight, breathable clothing is best. In cooler months, layers work well since you'll be outside for the full hour. Avoid loose, flowing fabric that could spook the horses. Jeans or riding pants are always a solid choice.

**3. Listen to Your Guide**

Our trail guides are experienced, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about each horse's personality. Before you mount, they'll give you a brief orientation on how to steer, stop, and communicate with your horse. Pay close attention — it makes the whole experience smoother and more enjoyable.

**4. Relax and Trust Your Horse**

Horses are incredibly perceptive animals. If you're tense, they'll feel it. Take a few deep breaths, sit tall in the saddle, and trust that your horse has been carefully selected for your skill level. Gay Leigh personally evaluates every horse to ensure they're calm, responsive, and well-suited for trail rides.

**5. Arrive 15 Minutes Early**

Give yourself time to check in, sign your waiver, get fitted for your hat, and meet your horse before the ride begins. Rushing creates stress for both you and the animals. Arriving early means you get the full experience — including that magical moment when you first connect with your horse.

We can't wait to welcome you to the ranch. Book your trail ride today and experience the heart of Texas from the saddle.
