How to Choose the Right Horse for Your Skill Level
One of the most important factors in a great riding experience is the horse-rider match. Here's how we think about pairing riders with horses at Broken Bow Ranch.
One of the questions we get most often from new riders is: "How do you know which horse is right for me?" It's a great question, and the answer reveals a lot about what makes a good riding experience.
At Broken Bow Ranch, Gay Leigh personally evaluates every horse and every rider to make the best possible match. Here's how we think about it.
**Understanding Horse Temperament**
Horses, like people, have distinct personalities. Some are calm and steady — perfect for beginners who need a forgiving, patient partner. Others are more energetic and responsive — ideal for intermediate and advanced riders who want a horse that reacts to subtle cues.
We categorize our horses into three broad temperament groups:
- **Steady Eddies**: Calm, predictable, great for beginners and nervous riders
- **Middle of the Road**: Responsive but forgiving, good for riders with some experience
- **Spirited Partners**: Athletic and sensitive, best for experienced riders
**The Rider Assessment**
Before your first lesson, Gay Leigh conducts a brief skills assessment. She'll ask about your riding history, watch how you approach and interact with the horse, and observe your posture and balance. This isn't a test — it's a conversation. The goal is to understand where you are so we can build from there.
**Why the Match Matters**
A beginner on a spirited horse is a recipe for frustration and fear. An advanced rider on a horse that's too slow and unresponsive will get bored and develop bad habits. The right match creates a positive feedback loop: the horse responds well, the rider gains confidence, and both improve together.
**What to Tell Us**
When you book your lesson, be honest about your experience level. If you haven't ridden in 10 years, tell us. If you're nervous around large animals, tell us. There's no judgment here — only the goal of giving you the best possible experience.
